Board of Assessment Review

Each local government is required by State law to have a Board of Assessment Review.  The Board of Assessment Review meets to hear assessment complaints.  Any person who pays property taxes can grieve an assessment, including:

  • property owners
  • purchasers
  • tenants who are required to pay property taxes pursuant to a lease or written agreement

Grievance Day is the 3rd Tuesday of June

Grievance Day is the last day property owners may file a formal complaint seeking a reduction in their tentative assessments.  Only the assessment on the current tentative assessment roll can be grieved - you can't grieve assessments from prior years.  There is no cost to grieve an assessment and it does not require you to hire a lawyer.

Assessment complaint forms are also available in the Assessor's Office. Please note that the assessment represents the property's value as of July 1st of the prior year. Therefore, estimate of value should reflect that date.

The board consists of not less than three nor more than five members appointed by the Town Board.  Members have knowledge of property values.  The term of members is five years and commences on the first day of October.  A majority of the board must consist of members who are not officers or employees of the Town.  Each member of the Board of Assessment Review must attend a training.
